Illinois State Police Use Semi-Trucks to Bust Distracted Drivers

OAK BROOK, IL  (June 21, 2019) – The Illinois State Police has launched a unique new safety initiative called “Trooper in a Truck” in hopes to make the roadways safer from distracted drivers.

This program, a partnership between ISP officials, the Illinois Trucking Association, and Cadence Premier Logistics, puts troopers in the cabs of semi-trucks to help catch distracted and reckless drivers.

So far, the state police have conducted “Trooper in a Truck” operations on Interstates I-57, I-55, and I-80 to enforce Illinois state laws, and they’ve seen a lot of texting and driving.

They have also witnessed plenty of Scott’s Law violations. A Scott’s Law violation involves motorists not moving over to allow a safe space for someone broken down on the side of the road.

When law enforcement spots the offending driving behaviors, they radio ahead to troopers in squad cars, and the police units take enforcement action.

Traffic Safety Reminders

  1. Cell phone use must be hands-free in Illinois at all times.  This includes text messages.
  2. When approaching a stationary authorized emergency vehicle, a driver must proceed with due caution, reduce the speed of the vehicle, and maintain a safe speed for road conditions, if changing lanes is impossible or unsafe.
